Have you ever seen one of those movies where a hypnotist or a magician performs hypnotism on stage? Where the magician asks for a volunteer, then “hypnotizes” the volunteer by waving a pocket watch in front of him, making him focus on the swinging watch until he appears to be in a hypnotic trance. Then, the hypnotist makes the volunteer do some ridiculous things like performing a cartwheel or doing jumping jacks. Have you ever seen those scenes in the movies? I know I did. I’ve seen those in TV too many times. I honestly thought that’s exactly how hypnosis works until I did my research and found out that all of those aren’t true. Hypnotism doesn’t make you do all kinds of stuff you normally wouldn’t when you are not hypnotized; in fact in hypnotism, you are in total control of your mind. Unlike in the movies we see, where you can only come out of hypnotism when the hypnotist snaps his fingers, in real life, you can choose to come out of your hypnotic state if you want to. If you are thinking of seeking therapeutic help from hypnotherapy for the first time, I’m sure you have a lot of questions going on your mind about what happens and what to expect in hypnosis.
Being in the state of hypnosis is being in a totally relaxed state. You are not in a deep sleep like how the movies depict it, but being in a hypnotic trance is mostly described as similar to coming home from a very tiring day from work and then laying down to the most comfortable bed, giving you the most relaxing feeling ever, like you do not want it to end.
In a hypnotic trance, your conscious mind is relaxed and your subconscious is stimulated and heightened. Once under hypnosis, your therapist will suggest some ideas to you about what you need to help with, whether it’s anxiety or losing weight. Again, at this stage, your therapist won’t be making you do things you don’t want to do but he will be merely guiding you to uncover your inner ability to overcome or improve a certain psychological aspect in your life. Your therapist will help you visualize yourself being happier and healthier.
Hypnosis has been practiced for decades now. It can be a very therapeutic and helpful way to overcome several psychological issues you are dealing with only if you are willing.
